Lovin' Phil, Still Missing Jerry
This show was a sonic boom.... Being there was a harrowing experience. At times it seemed that there was competition between the two sides of the stage. There were some great parts... Mountains (f'ing awesome)..., but I was left wondering if they weren't aiming for a tense and scary halloween sound. The psychadelic energy in the room was thick enough to choke on, and this was evidenced by the inordinate number of freak outs pulsing through the floor. Did anybody else feel like the left side was trying to whip the auditorium into a whirlwind and spew us all through the roof?
It was a great time, though, just to be hanging with friends in Sin City, and it's great to hear it again. Phil really is the last link to the energy of the dead, and we all owe him thanks and prayers for keepin' on...
Regardless, after a long discussion back in the room, me and my bro, wondering what was missing from today's "jam" sound, nailed it down to one key ingredient... He's Gone.

Peak performance!
I wasn't there but the energy and groove and interaction in this show are totally JAW-DROPPING. Phil's 2006 shows blew me away already - particularly the fall tour - but this is inspiring. The Other One Jam alone just lifts me off the ground. Totally unexpected, monumental show. If this doesn't do it for ya, then there's something wrong with your ears.

the faster we go?!?!?!?
decent show.
FYI, in the 60s, before the advent of album oriented rock, artists got paid for albums by the song. so, even though the band considered the big ol suite on "anthem of the sun" to be one song called "that's it for the other one," they basically got baked and made up a bunch of fake song titles to get a little extra cash.
hence, no one in the band, and subsequently nobody in the taping community, has ever considered "quadlibet for tenderfeet" or "the faster we go the rounder we get" to be songs in their own right.
tapers (and tape labelers) did borrow "cryptical envelopment" as a way to differentiate when the dead did (or did not) play the "the other day they waited" parts. but trust me on this, nobody has EVER sat around musing over whether or not the dead played "we leave the castle." that is until this thread ;-)
for another example of this "fake song title" phenomenon, check out the quicksilver album "happy trails." they take what is essentailly a massive live "who do you love" jammed into "mona" and make up random titles (like "which do you love" and "when do you love") in order to get paid. same deal.

stop the minutia
Hey kids, why are we getting in peeing up a rope contest about the minutia of song titles and what was written in Dodd's book. This is what it is. Let's all respect this for this and not try to hold it up to anything else. My understanding is that The Grateful Dead never tried to be the best, just the ones doing it. My guess would be that is what Phil is doing with whatever friends he assembles.

"Other One" vs. "Faster We Go the Rounder We Get"
It is interesting to note that even on the "Grateful Dead (Skulls & Roses)" album the Grateful Dead did not bother to annotate "The Other One" as "The Other One Suite" or break out the movements within the piece. I know some folks spend a lot of time on the details, and that is great for information purposes, but it doesn't change the music.

Message to Shiva Ho
I'm the guy who uploaded the first set. When I go to the item page, I can stream just fine, so I think the problem might be with your system... As I said in my notes, I just uploaded what I downloaded in a bittorrent, so you get the original uploader's info file. If you think the set list needs correction, go ahead and post that new setlist in a comment. And maybe you should check your own system first before assuming that someone else has screwed up, because the show is streaming fine for me... And you're right, this show is IT!

Phil is IT
Another Great Phil show....& recording.
Only problem with this is the guy who uploaded this & the 2nd set failed to properly input the show info before deriving so there's missing or incorrect file info on the mp3s...as evident in the flash player at the top of the page....Also if a song or jam goes into the next please indicate it with the tradition right arrow PLEASE!!!

Setlist Correction
Track 3 is most definately a "New Potato Caboose" jam (not a "What's Become of the Baby" jam).
Track 5 should be listed as "Other One Jam" because the verses are not sung.
And to respond to mde420 (first poster on this thread)- although you are technically correct about the title "The Faster We Go..." being the "true" copyright title for the tune we know as "The Other One," the fact is that for decades EVERYONE has used the latter title. It would seem more than a little silly to change things now, and rewrite all those setlists.

Great show, need to fix the setlist
Set list error, track 5 is not called "The Other One." That's not even the name of the whole song...anyway, Track 5 is actually called "The Faster We Go, The Rounder We Get." Since they don't sing the lyrics, it should really be "The Faster We Go, The Rounder We Get Jam". It's even referenced on page 42 of "The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics" The only time it's called "That's It for the Other One (Suite)" is when all 4 parts are played together. We don't label "Let It Grow" "Weather Report Suite" do we?
This show overall is sick. It's tough to hear Trey singing sometimes and Phil voice is a rough as ever, but the show is AWESOME. Larry Campbell jumping ship from an 18 year run with Bobby Dylan to PL&F was a smart move. His interaction with Trey is off the hook, the two of them are non-stop all night. John Medeski on keys, what a choice, he blazes across the keys like he's always been there. Phil is making some smart moves with who he is playing with and he might be at the peak of his career right now. Sure, it's not the Grateful Dead and it never will be, but we must enjoy the music that the remaining members are creating. The magic is still there, and this show proves it. BIG props to Phil Lesh for staying ahead of the game and for allowing the music to always evolve! I recommend that you download both sets and 10/29/06 as well.

Some nice moments at this show, but for spoiled fans who saw Jerry perform, it's hard to get too excited..
Not sure where this taper was, but man it doesn't even sound like the same show I heard that night. It was a good show, but not great. The following night at cheese was a far greater experience. There were definitely some nice moments in this show, the only noteworthy performance was mountains of the moon. Some of the hard core jamming really moved away from what the Grateful Dead was all about; their "job is to shed light and not to master". It seems like anybody new that is pulled into the Dead has an ego that needs to be released. I do enjoy hearing Trey's vocals over anybody else that has filled in for Jerry though. But, same complaints for him, his guitar work sometimes is a little too much for my head, and with the two guitars battling to be heard, it was a little cacophonus. I'm not sure where the confirmation came from on the What's become of the baby title? I can't begin to discern anything that remotely sounds like wbotb, it just sounds like the intro jam to cryptical to me. I did enjoy the songs where Larry Campbell was playing slide though, and Medeski was a nice touch, but a little over-assertive at times, but then again so was everyone else, other than Phil and John.

Yes, thank you for posting the 1st set!! Very nice sounding, despite the boomy bass. We were on the RAIL Dead Center, and this show blew our minds. The sound coming straight off the band's amps was tight, sweet and clear. Trey, the wandering wild thing that he was the night before with his own band, was given plenty of leash by Lesh all night. At one point, comin' round after a tidal wave jam, Phil looked directly at me as I was saluting, gave me a big smile knowing how amazing they sounded, I gave him a thumbs up and he nodded as he backed up, looked over at Trey and opened another spot for him. This business of letting Trey rage went on all night. My GF, who tired of Trey's "repititious headbanging" the night before, remarked at how great he was when he had Phil as Director. Trey's interaction with JM were a treat to hear and watch as well. It was all blissful smiles up front! I am sending some of the many dozens of pics I shot that night to Philzone.
